Taking care of yourself comes in many different forms. After the long two years we’ve all had, something you should include on your list of things to do is to get away for a long weekend.

This may be tricky if you work for yourself, but by letting your clients know ahead of time, working with a virtual assistant, and getting work done early, you can make this happen!

When you’re ready for a leisurely jaunt, PEMS Balancehighlights four cities in the south that can help you hit your own personal reset button.

Helen, GA

Helen is the coolest city in Georgia that you’ve probably never heard of. This Alpine-style village is like a smaller and less touristy Gatlinburg that has everything you need for fun and relaxation at your fingertips. For a cool drink on a warm day, King Ludwig’s Biergarten can’t be beaten. Hungry? You can’t walk more than 30 feet without being tempted by Bavarian and other culinary delights.

The biggest benefit of Helen, whether you’re visiting or plan to eventually relocate to the mountains, is that there is a noticeably slower pace. Plan to stay nearby in Clarksville (our top pick is Glen Ella Springs Inn & Restaurant) if you want to avoid the crowds at night.

Knoxville, TN

About three hours east of Nashville you’ll find the home of the Big Orange. As one of the largest cities in Tennessee, The Marble City boasts both Southern hospitality and plenty of amenities to keep you busy (or not). Visiting with a lover? Check out the Oliver Hotel and grab a box of candy at the South's Finest Chocolate Factory.

If you’re thinking you might want to move for work or school, you’re in luck. Rentals in Knoxville are fairly affordable, and Zillow can be a great resource that will help you stay within your budget, even if you only want to rent for a few months while you search for a home. You’ll have an opportunity to choose from pet-friendly properties with room for everyone and plenty of amenities to make you feel at home.

Glasgow, KY

Just north of the Tennessee-Kentucky state line is the sleepy town of Glasgow. As you might expect in a city named after one of the oldest towns in Scotland, Glasgow is home to the Glasgow Highland Games, which are held each summer at the Barren River Lake State Resort Park. Incidentally, the park is open year-round for your relaxation needs.

Something else to consider is that you’ll never go hungry in the South, and Glasgow is no exception. RestaurantJi notes that there are many places to satisfy your culinary desires, whether you’re looking for sushi, burgers, or a good, old-fashioned Tennessee barbecue.

Murfreesboro, TN

Like Knoxville, Murfreesboro is a college town, but don’t let that deter you from planning a vacation south of Nashville. You’ll have an opportunity to visit the historic Batey Farms and soak up some culture at the area's museums, which include a six-acre reconstruction of the town as it stood originally.

After a long day, there’s no better way to relax and recharge than by visiting Royal Massage & Yoga Lounge. You can choose between 15 minutes and one hour for a relaxing deep tissue, hot stone, or CBD massage. Should you choose to make Murfreesboro your home, you can enjoy membership for yoga classes starting at just $99 per month.

Travel is one of the best gifts you can give yourself, especially if you’re self-employed and trying to focus on self-care in 2022. When you’re ready to fully unplug from work, the above four cities are great places to visit, and they are even better places to call home. So plan a week, plan a weekend, or give yourself a new address. You can’t go wrong in the south.

Self-Care for the Body and Mind

It’s been established for some time that self-care is important to get through the many pressures of the modern world. However, self-care and a healthy lifestyle became a real necessity as each one of us had to navigate life in a pandemic and keep our wits about ourselves in isolation. Self-care is still crucial as we work to keep ourselves healthy both in mind and body.

To learn more, check out these tips from wellness expert Rev. Dr. Jacqueline J. Madison at PEMS Balance.

Get Off the Couch

If you haven’t yet, it’s time to start exercising in order to keep yourself healthy. And if you’re still not ready to return to the gym, you can work out at home.

You can work out at home, even when you only have a small space available.

It’s more important to focus on the quality of your exercises, so keep your routine flexible.

Consider making use of free online exercise classes to keep yourself guided and motivated, and to add variation to your workout routine.

Exercise is an excellent way to relieve stress. People who work from home could particularly benefit from the mental health benefits a workout can provide.

Exercising can also help you become more mindful of your body, your surroundings, and your breathing. Many people develop a passion for meditation as a result.

Get Creative in the Kitchen

Of course, when it comes to staying healthy, eating nutritiously is just as important as exercise. Fortunately, there are many ways to eat healthily.

Consider a healthy meal delivery service to get your whole-food fix.

Try replacing one meal with a healthy, satisfying smoothie to amp up your energy and help your digestive system.

You can also start cooking healthy yet easy meals for you and your family.

You might need to take a crash course on cooking, but the fact is, it’s easy enough to learn.

Get in the Mood

As you keep your body healthy, don’t forget to do the same for your heart and mind, as well. Fluctuating moods and anxiety levels are inevitable amid the ongoing uncertainties of a pandemic, but it doesn’t mean that you should remain at the mercy of your emotions. Rather, it’s important to take measures to boost your mood and reduce stress.

  • Staying connected and engaged with friends and family can certainly boost your mood.

  • You can also make your efforts more personal by looking inward through meditation, journaling, or even learning something new.

  • Try Spiritual Counseling or Life Coaching from Rev. Dr. Jacqueline J. Madison.

  • Certain foods ease depression, too, so get to know what foods you should be consuming for the purpose, and add them to your grocery list.

  • You might even want to consider adopting a furry friend to give yourself some quality company.

Suffice it to say, self-care is an effective practice to cope with today’s myriad fears and uncertainties. Keeping your body healthy while keeping your mind in tiptop shape will make you well-prepared for life as we emerge from the pandemic.

Kimberly Hayes
